Resting and recovering

Dear Ones,

To sustain oneself on an extended journey, being able to rest and recover are both essential. I am not so good at this, so I am meeting a personal edge which, if practiced in a wholesome manner, allows for restoration of body and mind. I arrived a day earlier than most people in order to recover from the travel and be ready to enjoy what the pilgrimage has to offer.

Our group is gathering at the LaVista Tokyo Bay Hotel to officially begin the pilgrimage on Tuesday, October 13. It is already getting dark here on Monday evening around 6PM as I type this message. I have a beautiful view from my room, one that is helping me simply sit and enjoy looking out over the city and the bay. I’ve been taking long walks and short naps, enjoying the great weather, and eating such amazing sushi. We are next door to the Tokyo fish market, the largest in Japan, so the fish is as fresh as you can get.

I took a picture early this morning and another just now from my window in the hotel. The pictures aren’t the main thing, but they are reminders of the cycles that make up our impermanent, interdependent lives — night and day, inhaling and exhaling, birth and death, light and dark. Each day of pilgrimage will have its own cycle and as a group we will find our rhythm, a temporary chosen sangha.

Once we are all here and begin our shared journey tomorrow, I am not sure how much time I will have to send messages like this, but for now I want to send my love and show you the view — both from very early this morning (5AM) and now just over 12 hours later, in the evening. This is where I have been sitting.

With love,
Flint
